If you feel you have a dependency problem, here is a general course of action:

*Gain insight to the causes of your dependency
*Learn to recognize destructive thinking, emotional, and behavior patterns
*Realize how unhappy you feel about your dependency
*Learn to avoid cognitive shortcuts (jumping to conclusions, acting upon assumptions, etc)
*Confront your fears
*Work on your self-esteem, self-confidence, and assertiveness
*Observe couples who have healthy (not perfect) relationships. Identify what they are doing differently
*Practice self-control. Donīt slip back into familiar patterns when something goes wrong
*Get support from lots of people, donīt go overboard with anyone in particular
